THE BEGINNING - THE 80s

The Fountains germinated in the mid '80s, fueled by sweat equity, management contracts and consulting assignments. The company achieved early market success with its first seniors' housing venture, The Fountains at La Cholla in Tucson.

As general partner in The Fountains at La Cholla, Freshwater owned a fractional interest in the asset. While investors fared very well, at times revenues were so thin Freshwater didn't collect a paycheck, and to supplement revenues during the late-1980s, The Fountains worked as fee managers for institutional owners such as Citibank and Mellon Bank, specializing in seniors housing assets.
